Ik zag deze vanmorgen in nrc.next, en nu ook op BoingBoing. Daar wordt een hele discussie gevoerd of je kunt zeggen of chimpansees rouwen of niet, of je ze "menselijke" eigenschappen kunt toedichten. Dit commentaar vind ik in dezen mooi:
I don't think there is much doubt that animals feel some emotions, including depression and grief I think the mistake many people make is the extrapolating from those fairly elemental emotions to more grandiose mental acrobatics. The chimps may recognize death as a final separation, and feel sorrow at the loss of a companion. Do they then ponder on the meaning of it all and start to imagine an afterlife? Probably not.
